Project Proposal

The goal of my project is to connect people to the internal processes going on in their bodies. I'd like them to attain a certain state of agoraphobia and distilled information that exists within themselves. Even though I am trying to attain a level of biological connection and direct molecular processes, this project can be taken and interpreted many different ways by the audience~ such as the growing ability to attain a dense amount of information for humans as technology grows stronger and learning new things can be easily achieved. If the audience leaves with such an emotion, the project will succeed.

VISUALS

Set Up

Experience
A dark room. You come in. The projector recoqnizes you and instantly catches your movements. Starts projecting images of chromosomes slowly appearing in different spot of your body. After you leave the room, the next person will begin his projections with the amount of fallen chromosomes you left with. At the end of the day, there will be a print of the "person" created that day. Attendees may input their names, which will show up as "authors" of the print at the end of each day.

Example of a projection collected over time

chromosomal images taken from the following image:

This is an example of what a finished image after 1 day of the exhibit may look like. Notice that some parts have clumps of one color or another, which represents the fact that parts of our chromosomes code for different things on our body. This image would vary in how many chromosomes would be "evolved" onto it, if the gallery has a busy day, the human form would be more defined. On a day with less visitors, there may be just a few sprinkles of chromosomes on a body.

Problems
As this project becomes real, I have to keep in mind its drawbacks- technical and physical. Physcially, I'd have to keep in mind that there visitors will be wearing different types of clothing which could impact the quality of the image being projected. The hope is that texture and color of clothing will not vary the quality too much. This will depend on the camera and light source coming form the projector. The other issue I'd have to keep in mind is the radius of motion detection and making sure my audience knows some boundries for how far they could go and still be a part of the exhibit. Easiest way to do this would be programming the projector to turn off once the visitor is outside a boundry.

Research
Most of my research to make a strong idea was done in the first part of my project and can be viewed on my blog at jubruk.blogspot.com
This quarter was more used to refine my ideas and experience and goals I'd like to achieve as an artist from this project rather than delving further into the ideas presented in this project. It was harder to distill what I had already researched into a simpler, more elegant visual and experience.

Reflection of Using an Innovative Sketchspace

The process of creating a sketchspace seemed like a useful tool that could help a grouwing artist perfect and tone his skills of creations. For me, the process of creating a safe, easy to use tool that would actually benefit me in my research and generation of ideas proved to be an arduous but interesting goal.

I had set out first to build a soft of “mind map” to connect thoughts, words, videos, photos- everything enticing to me in order to bring all my inspirations into one area where connections are bound to happen. The technical process of creating such a map was in itself a project, which I happened to run into conflicts with, especially since the creation of this project if it were my choice needed to as well be documented in a sketchspace. Chicken or egg?

In the end, I decided to drop this for a future project and try an experiement with building a simple website that was easy to update with separate color coded areas for information that I was intaking. The creation of this site was not too difficulty, but keeping up with the updates was quiet a challenge. I would have thoughts that I would write down in other blogs, videos I would favorite in other accounts, sketches made in my tangible sketchbook that were already documented for me in my head and did not prove a need to be collected together in one area. Linking my different blogs and online accounts together on one site, however, did prove a well enough reflection area that helped me think of all my inspirations while staring at the cusps of it outlines on my sketchspace website. This brought me to some ideas, connections, conclusions, and thoughts that generated a few more ideas. These ideas were mostly on how better to organize information and how these organizations could potentially be made into an artistic realm.

We are all culprits of the informational age and thus so are automatically intrigued with condesed information and distilled importance of news. My sketchspace was a sort of sive in collecting some things which stood out in my own cultural webs of information in oder to bring them together and distill what I wanted to create artistically. However, I still prefer a blog-type environment since it can be reached in many more places and is more easily accessible to upload new thoughts/pictures/videos and tother information to, as well as a great tool for receiving feedback from the audience.

Prehaps in the future I can work out my mind map experiment and it will be an even more helpful took just for generating ideas from keywords of inspiration.
